Definition

Montelukast is a medication belonging to the class of leukotriene receptor antagonists. It's primarily used to manage asthma, seasonal allergies (hay fever), and prevent exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.


Indications for Use

 Montelukast is prescribed to control symptoms of asthma, such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing. It can also alleviate symptoms of seasonal allergies like sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, and itching.


Dosage

The typical dosage for adults and children above 15 years old with asthma or allergic rhinitis is 10 milligrams once daily, usually in the evening. For children aged 6 to 14 years, the dosage is usually 5 milligrams once daily. Always follow your doctor's prescription and guidance for dosage adjustments.


Drug Interactions

Montelukast can interact with certain medications, including phenobarbital, rifampin, and certain anticonvulsants. Always inform your healthcare provider about all medications you're taking to avoid potential interactions.


Side Effects

Common side effects may include headache, stomach pain, diarrhea, dizziness, and cough. Rarely, it can cause mood or behavior changes, such as agitation or depression, especially in children. Consult your healthcare provider if you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Montelukast.
