Will conjunctivitis go away by itself?

The duration of conjunctivitis (pink eye) can vary depending on the cause:

Viral Conjunctivitis: Most cases of viral conjunctivitis will resolve on their own within 1 to 2 weeks without specific treatment. However, viral conjunctivitis can be highly contagious, so it's important to practice good hygiene to prevent spreading it to others.

Bacterial Conjunctivitis: Bacterial conjunctivitis can also improve on its own, but it often requires treatment with antibiotic eye drops or ointments to speed up recovery and reduce the risk of complications. Without treatment, bacterial conjunctivitis may last longer than viral conjunctivitis.

Allergic Conjunctivitis: Allergic conjunctivitis usually improves once the allergen is removed or avoided. Antihistamine eye drops or oral medications can help relieve symptoms and speed up recovery.

Irritant Conjunctivitis: If conjunctivitis is caused by an irritant, such as chemicals or foreign bodies, removing the irritant and practicing good eye hygiene can help the eye heal.

In general, mild cases of conjunctivitis may resolve on their own with time and supportive care, such as using cool compresses to soothe the eyes and practicing good hygiene to prevent spreading the infection. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, or if you have severe pain, vision changes, or other concerning symptoms, it's important to seek medical advice for proper evaluation and treatment.
